“Born of Jets” isn’t just a clever slogan. It has a literal meaning in the history of Saab. A Saab factory was built in 1938, in Trollhattan Sweden, just as the onset of World War II approached. Saab originally built bombers and fighters as the war began and escalated. Near the end of the 1940s, after the war had ended, Saab diversified into the automobile market, producing their first car in 1949 called the Saab 92. As with many automakers, as their experience and innovative ideas grew, so did the Saab lineup through the 1950s and 1960s. Greater attention to safety, power, and performance led to success on racetracks and in rally events during that era. Better aerodynamics, larger sizes, and turbo-charging became a Saab staple and its popularity increased in the United States. The came under the General Motors umbrella in 1989 and were recently sold to the Spyker Cars, a Dutch auto manufacturer.
