Nissan began rolling Altimas off U.S. assembly lines in 1992 as a replacement for the Stanza. They were originally compact cars but have since evolved into mid-size vehicles. Nissan announced the fourth generation of the vehicle in 2006 at the New York Auto Show. It was to be the first vehicle to employ the much-heralded Nissan D platform.
